R.E.A.D. (”Read, Enrich, Achieve, Discover”) Program
Cultivates a lifelong love of literature in young readers. Dedicated volunteers visit second-grade classrooms to read aloud and inspire curiosity through storytelling. The program also strengthens school libraries through book donations, and each student receives a personal gift book in May to encourage continued reading at home.

Preschool R.E.A.D. (”Read, Enrich, Achieve, Discover”) Program
This program supports school readiness and language growth by nurturing early literacy and a love of storytelling for preschoolers in the Contra Costa County Head Start program at a critical stage of development. Volunteers visit preschool classrooms to read aloud, spark imagination, and build foundational language skills through engaging stories and conversation. Each student also receives a personal book to take home, encouraging families to continue reading together.

Listen Program
A weekly reading program designed to help second grade students build confidence and strengthen their literacy skills. Volunteers work individually with teacher-selected children who are not yet reading at grade level, listening to them read, providing patient guidance, encouragement, and targeted practice. In addition to personalized tutoring, books are donated to eager young readers so they can continue building skills and discovering the joy of reading beyond the classroom.

Kids on the Block
Volunteers in this program present engaging and educational puppet shows for students Pre-K through fourth grade, creating a safe and welcoming space for meaningful learning. Through storytelling and relatable puppet characters, children explore topics such as physical and emotional disabilities, bullying prevention, empathy, and social challenges in a way that feels approachable and non-threatening. This gentle format helps open conversations and foster understanding, inclusion, and respect. Performances are also given to Head Start preschoolers, giving these messages at a formative age.

Elementary Arts Discovery
Under the guidance of classroom teachers, volunteers lead enriching art lessons that celebrate ethnic diversity and multicultural perspectives. Through hands-on creative exploration, students are encouraged to express themselves artistically while learning about a wide range of traditions and styles. The program fosters curiosity, dialogue, and thoughtful questions about art, identity, and community while allowing students to also value their own uniqueness.
